Folger-specific note
Purchase made possible by The Ann Jennalie Cook Acquisitions Fund. Purchase made possible by The Karen Gundersheimer Acquisitions Endowment. From dealer's description: "SECOND EDITION. 12mo (130 x 75 mm), pp. [iv], 188, tear on p. 79 along edge of text, with no loss and on p. 111 through page number, text slightly browned and generally well read, in contemporary calf, extremities rubbed and worn, spine gilt in compartments, with the calligraphic ownership inscriptions of Jos. Clifton (on the title page) and ‘Mrs Dorothy Loyd’s Book 1698. Witnes. S.G.’ (on the endpaper, also Dorothy Lloyd [sic] on the pastedown) and the Hayhurst bookplate. First printed in Paris earlier the same year by Blageart, this is a scarce little guide to the intricacies of love and desire. Gay describes a note by J. Janin in the Comtesse de Verrue’s copy: ‘Ce petit volume a été rencontré sur la toilette de Rosalinde, entre un pot de fard et un flacon d’eau de Portugal. Le destin de livres!’. This copy has long been in England, as shown by the two early English provenances, Joseph Clifton and Mrs Dorothy Lloyd, whose inscription is executed in a neat calligraphic hand and dated 1698. With a brief introduction from the bookseller to the reader, which informs us ‘Comme ce Volume a esté presque arraché des mains de l’Autheur, il est à souhaiter qu’un succés favorable l’invite à en donner d’autres’. The publisher forewarns the reader of a number of errors in the printing but suggests that punctuation has not seemed worth correcting, on the assumption that the reader will excuse any errors."
