Folger-specific note
From dealer's description: "Two vols., 8vo. (21.2 cms. x 13.3 cms.), contents as below. Very good, bound in marbled paper over boards, spine labels, some rubbing and wear to binding but good. The collection possibly assembled and bound up for sale by an early bookseller. Sämmelband of 38 items relating to the Amsterdam theatre fire of 7 May 1772, an extraordinary conflagration, visible from a great distance, which caused considerable destruction and in which eighteen people were killed. The pieces include (1.) an illustrated history of the theatre up until its destruction; moral considerations on theatre performance, amongst them (4.) a pamphlet referencing the Amsterdam fire containing a translation of a work on theatre by the New Jersey minister, president of (what was to become) Princeton and later signatory of the Declaration of Independence John Witherspoon (1723-1794); an Leo Cadogan Rare Books at Park Avenue Armory, March 7-10 2019, BOOTH D06 illustrated pamphlet (7.) on modern fire-fighting technology; a commemorative allegorical print (8.); (23.-26.) an edition of a poem on the fire by the woman novelist Betje Wolff (1738-1804) with works in response, the last authored by “A Woman”; (29.-32) pamphlets relating to a response to the fire by the British actor and theatre manager David Garrick (1717-1779). We have only found any of the Garrick material outside the Netherlands in the Bibliothèque Nationale; the Witherspoon pamphlet is found outside the Netherlands in Princeton, NYPL and Michigan (with a copy of a 1780 edition in Belgium); the Wolff material has copies of editions outside European mainland in (23.) BL, Harvard, NLS; (24., 25.) BL; (26.) BL, University of Victoria. The fire-fighting pamphlet is found outside Netherlands in Bibliothèque Nationale and New York State Library. It is wonderful to find all these pamphlets, and many more, collected together." Ordered from Leo Cadogan Rare Books Ltd, D9289, 2019-03-08, "New York Catalogue, March 2019", Ref. 3383
