Folger-specific note
From dealer's description: "Rare first edition of this spectacular writing and calligraphy manual by the 17th century German writing master Johann Muscat (1659-1711). The volume consists of seventeen engraved plates (including title) which depict elaborate alphabets, sayings, and short religious phrases in different scripts, all surrounded by richly illustrated borders with figures of beasts and birds, ranging from griffins to elephants, eagles to horses, swans and lions. Four plates show different alphabets and elaborate initials. It is rare to find a manual such as this in such perfect condition. Muscat trained as writing and arithmetic master at Nuremberg. At first he worked with his father, who was cantor in Lauf, before being appointed writing and arithmetic master in Hersbruck. (Nürnbergisches Gelehrtenlexikon, VI, p. 483). Later editions were published in 1709, 1729 and 1773 - all are uncommon. Berlin Ornamentstichsammlung 4846, Bonacini 1254; Doede, 89 (later edition); outside of Germany OCLC: Strasbourg, Bibliothèque Nationale, and Newberry."
