Note
From dealer's description: "Whilst the date of the fire is erroneously given as September 12, the letter provides much detail on the origin and the spread of the fire, which destroyed a large part of the City, including most of the civic buildings, old St. Paul. Cathedral, 87 parish churches, and over 13.000 homes. The newsletter opens with a brief description of the city, the importance of the Thames for transport and commerce, the marvel of what appears to refer to the old medieval London Bridge with its 20 pillars, and comments on the recent victories of the English in the second Anglo-Dutch war, when they succeeded in burning or destroying 120 Dutch vessels. The fire is described as having started in a blacksmith's forge, not a bakery, to then quickly spread to the narrow streets of mostly wooden houses and, transported by howling winds, eventually reaching Paternoster Row, with the citizens forced to leave all their merchandise, their belongings behind in the resulting chaotic conditions. When it reaches the 'celebrated Temple of St. Paul', a place of practice of 'heresy' and 'false religion', the appearance on horseback of King Charles II and his brother cannot stop the advancing fire ... The following Monday it reaches the Palace, with its canons used to shoot nearby buildings to create a 'wall' from the ruins. It only stops when it reaches the nearby Catholic Church and the wind dies down. Contrary to the figures referred to above, the writer mentions the destruction of 114 'temples of heresy', 55.000 houses, leaving around 300.000 people without homes and possessions, and a loss of 8000 lives. As per the heading the information is based on several letters recently sent to Spain, and in particular a report by the Spanish Ambassador to England, the Conde de Molina."
