Folger-specific note
Purchase made possible by The Gladys Brooks Acquisitions Endowment Fund. From dealer's description: "Three autograph letters by Michael Redgrave with excellent theatrical and personal content. These come with three original photographs taken by Michael Redgrave. The letters were written to Redgrave's friend and American press agent Walter Alford. Redgrave is candid about his bisexuality and discusses his family and his work in the theatre and films at length. The third letter is typewritten and dated December 8, 1951. Redgrave writes: "The two play scripts arrived yesterday and I am most grateful to you for them even though, as you probably guessed, I have the script of 'The Country Girl.' We star rehearsals on January 14th and open in Edinburgh on February 11th, six weeks on the road, and then we'll see what London thinks of it. The only trouble at the moment is that we haven't got the country girl. Pamela Browne wanted to play it and then had some kind of misunderstanding with Henry Sherek and has withdrawn, and various other suitable ladies are all tied up it seems, excepting Sylvia Sydney who wants so much money that the play could not possibly be a financial proposition... Sam Wanamaker is directing, and is also playing the part of the director. I like him enormously and though I have never seen him act I think he should be wonderful in the part... Rachel [Kempson] is going into 'The Happy Time' which opens at the St. James's after the Christmas show. She plays the mother, and is very busy with a recording machine and a Glaswegian accent... "."
