Armorial bookplate of William Tennant (1805-1848) of Little Aston Hall, Shenstone, Staffordshire. He was educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford. The library was sold in London at auction by Samuel Leigh Sotheby & Co., 7 January 1850. Peter Le Neve’s copy, with his inscription to title page “Petri Le Neve Norroy”, and with occasional marginal annotations to text in his hand, eg. page 198, “see Valesius his posthumous works to prove St Ursula one Saint & Saint Undecimilla the other so but 2 instead of 11000 saints a treatise about it” on page 277 he notes, “daughter of Earle of anjou & mundy E---(?) Geffry plantagenet and sister of King Henry the 2d. married to Davidson of Owen prince of North Wales. See the Record to prove it Mag: Rut xix 20 H : 2 Rut 2 A: Madxxx(obscured) (Hist of the Excheqr pag 251 Sandfords Genealogicall History …” Occasionally he adds very short snippets of information to some pages, e.g. beside the printed text ‘Edward of Westminster.’ on page 338 Le Neve has annotated “son of King Edward the 4th”, and to page 330 the printed text ‘Reign of Hen. 7. George Grey Earl of Kent”, is annotated “Richard son of G:”, and with similar interlinear note, etc. Elsewhere he has makes mnemonic notes simply abbreviating parts of text in the margins in a few words. The volume is only sparsely annotated, but as often with Peter le Neve, it demonstrates the close attention he gave to heraldry and helps give body to our picture of this scholarly bibliophile.."
