Folger-specific note
From dealer's description: "For the Benefit of Confederate Veterans: Blackface Minstrals, a Female Impersonator, and a Shakespeare Burlesque (in Blackface?) -- this small but remarkable broadside documents an extraordinary minstral theatrical program, undertaken and performed for the benefit of Virginia Confederate veterans. The highlight of the show was a racist rendition of Shakespeare's Othello (presumably in blackface) newly entitled "DARE DE MONEY. WHAR? Or Desdemona and Othello." Original artifacts of Vaudevillian Shakespeare performances in the post-Confederate South are uncommon. The Female Impersonator was Ambler Brooke Moncure (1868-1933) who would later inherit Raceland Farm, Dinwiddie County, Virginia; Moncure has been described elsewhere as "a gentleman of deep antiquarian interests" (E.A. Wyatt, "Newmarket of the Virginia Turf" in: The William and Mary Quarterly Vol. 17, No. 4, Oct. 1937)." Ordered from: Michael Laird Rare Books, D 9257, 2018-11-15, email inquiry. Purchase made possible by The Paul Ruxin Acquisitions Endowment Fund.
