Folger-specific note
From dealer's description: "Cooke, Robert. Sixteenth century manuscript sheets. Being the beginnings of an Alphabet of Arms of Cooke's grants 1567-93. [Circa 1590-1600]. Folio (360 mm x 225 mm). 18 pages on 9 sheets (loose in a half calf binding). There are also three further sheets of blanks shields. These are divided differently but look contemporaneous. Watermark is similar to: Haewood 1721 and 1721A (1609 and 1614); Briquet 1585 (1589). Each sheet is divided into 9 sections, these red ruled. The crests are drawn in ink, with pencil guide sketches visible. 5 fine examples of he ermine (marten) crests with the animal drawn as a wolf with an ermine spot on a bushy tail. Collection of coats and crests in pen and ink tricks. These all appear to have been copied from Cooke's manuscript copy of grants (ca. 1567-1593) with an additional number (5 here) by Richard Lee (as in Folger MS v.b.256). Well drawn with an ease and freedom indicative of an experienced hand, most likely that of Nicholas Paddie (or Paddy), Rouge Dragon Pursuivant 1574-1588, and subsequently Lancaster Herald 1588-1602. But, it may be in the hand of Samuel Todde, whose equally confident hand bears close resemblance to Paddie's. The style is commensurate with the early period of heraldry: the crests are almost as large as the shields, and the antelopes and tigers are tusked and maned, as too is the dolphin, the ermine is wolf-like, the rhinoceros is armour-plated, many (about 40%) are shown issuing from or gorged by a ducal or mural coronet, an expedient so favoured by Cooke. The sheets comprise grantees whose surnames began with the letters S-Y inclusive: 159 crests, 3 blank. They appear to be an initial attempt by Paddie (or Todde) to collate and organise the available material. The crests are uncaptioned but accompanied by a full list of names, date and place of each grantee (supplied by Dr Robert Colley). Robert bought this manuscript from a private collection some years ago. The previous owner stated that these were previously part of a collection of loose letters to Edmund Lodge (1736-1839), Lancaster Herald."
