Folger-specific note
Purchase made possible by The Georges Lurcy Acquisitions Fund. From dealer's description: "Nineteenth-century French type mould, stamped ‘14’ on each half in several places, steel and wood (possibly beech). Overall dimensions assembled 120 side to side x 75 x 75mm plus the spring projecting 195mm from the base of the mould. The mould is stamped ‘14’ in several places indicating that it was used for casting type with a 14pt Didot body. 1 pt Didot = 0.376mm so 14pt = 5.264mm which is indeed the depth of the mould when assembled. The mould is complete apart from the two hooks for which would have been inserted in the holes on the top edge of the wood on each half. The hooks would have been used to flick the freshly cast type from the mould. [The UK and US point = 0.351mm so 14pt Didot is just under 15pts US.]." Ordered from Librairie Roger Gaskell Rare Books, D 9238, 2018-10-04, email quote.
