Folger-specific note
From dealer's description: "8vo (9.5 x 14.5cm) [14], 166pp., flyleaf with ink inscription “Jos. Stevens Wycombe Bucks 1775,” very good in original blind-ruled sheep, leather chipped at foot of spine but binding sound, light wear to extremities. First edition of this treatise by the prominent Quaker activist and missionary Francis Howgill (1618-1669) in which he outlines his interpretation of the purity of original Christian teaching and his opinons concerning the introduction of doctrines continued by the Roman Catholic Church which he considers to constitute apostasy. Headings include: “baptizing or sprinkling infants ... the sign of the Crosse ... swearing by the Gospel ... fasts and feasts and holy days ... priests vestures and garments, and bells ... mattens and singing of psalms by course in musical tunes ... the passover and the Lords Supper, and the ceremonies about it ... ministers and their office ... decrees of the Church of Rome ...” This is one of two variants of the first edition published in 1661 by Giles Calvert (line 7 of the title-page here reading “purity”) – both are similarly scarce. Wing H3162. ESTC lists 2 copies only (bLfr; bOq). Smith, J., A descriptive catalogue of Friends’ books, I, p. 994." Ordered from Samuel Gedge, D 9208, 2018-05-21, catalog 26, item 15.
