Folger-specific note
From dealer's description: "Robert Scantlebury was born in 1700, the son of John and Mary, a Quaker family from Falmouth, Cornwall. His splendid book is now in poor condition but is nonetheless testimony to the creative spirit of this young scholar as he extemporizes on the penmanship manuals of the late 17th- and early 18th century. Copying out ciphering books was standard practice in the teaching of mathematics, and it was not unusual for a scribe to add calligraphic flourishes when doing so. What's striking about this book is how the embellishment continues throughout, instead (as is often the case) of having only the title page, or tapering off as enthusiasm for the task gradually diminishes." Ordered from Dean Byass, D9181, 2018-02-22, "Armory Athenaeum" catalog, item 7569. Adopted by Twiss and Patrick Butler, Acquisitions Night 2019.
