Folger-specific note
From dealer's description: "An excellent copy of this scarce work by Maximilien-Henri, marquis de Saint-Simon (1720-1799) which consists of an essay on the theory of translation followed by translations into French, with the original English text facing, including a translation of the whole of An Essay on Man (1733-34) by Alexander Pope (1688-1744) and selections from Paradise Lost (1667) by John Milton (1608-1674), Cato (1713) by Joseph Addison (1672-1719), Hamlet (1603) by William Shakespeare (1564-1616), and Rural sports by John Gay (1685-1732). Finely printed on thick paper, this work was printed for Saint-Simon by Enschede of Harlem, the author residing in Holland for much of his literary career. In the introductory essay Saint-Simon explains his ideason the search for a more literal kind of translation that would retain the qualities of the text. A copy of this work is recorded as having been present in the library of Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790). 2 volumes bound in 1. 8vo (14.5 x 23.5 cm.) xviii, xvi, 199, [1]; 161, [1] pp. very good in near-contemporary tree calf, flat spine richly gilt in compartments, spine titled in gilt, plain brown endpapers, blue silk bookmark."
