Historical background
From dealer's description: "Ann Malet (b. 1704), nee S. Lo, was the wife of Alexander Malet, the Rector of Combe Florey, Somerset. This receipt book was passed from her down to their fourth child Elizabeth Malet (b. 1748) who married Thomas Charter (b. 1748), and subsequently to her cousin, the author of the inscription." Alexander Malet (1704-1775) was also rector of Maiden Newton, Dorset; Ann was daughter of the Reverend Laurence St Lo of Pulham, Dorset. (See Howlett, David J. "Malet, Sir Charles Warre, first baronet." In Oxford Dictionary of National Biography online (May 21, 2009), accessed 2019-05-02.) Elizabeth Charter, nee Malet, married Thomas Charter of Bishop's Lideard, Somerset on December 30, 1773. (See Courthope, William, ed. Debrett's Baronetage of England, 7th edition (1835), page 243). They had a daughter also named Elizabeth Charter (1782-June 15, 1860) who was a grandchild of the rector Alexander and Ann Malet (See Broadly, A. M. and Jerrold, Walter, eds. The Romance of an Elderly Poet: A Hitherto Unknown Chpater in the Life of George Crabbe, Revealed by His Ten Years' Correspondence with Elizabeth Charter 1815-1825 (1913), pages 52, 323.) The "T.H.W. Malet" in the inscription likely refers to Thomas Herbert Warre Malet (born April 8, 1859) the fourth child of Alice Anna Catherine Hawkes (d. 1905) and Octavius Warre Malet (May 7, 1811-Dec. 11, 1891). (See Burke, Bernard. Genealogical and Heraldic Dictionary of the Peerage and Baronetage...60th edition (1898), page 964; and see Somersetshire Archaeological and Natural History Society's Proceedings, 1891, Vol. 37 (1892), pages 127-130.)
Binding information
From dealer's description: "The limp vellum appears to be blind-stamped, but is, in fact, a repurposed binding that has been reversed. On the inside the stamping is in gilt (you can glimpse it under the upper and lower pastedowns). The design is of a single fillet forming two rectangles, one inside of the other, with each rectangle spanning both the upper and lower cover. On the internal rectangle, there are ornamental fleurons stamped in the inside and outside of the rectangle's corners. At the center point of the spine, there is a cluster of stamped ornaments forming an 'X' with an acorn and leaves at its center. Above the acorn is stamped the letter 'D.'"
