Folger-specific note
From dealer's description: "The layout in this manuscript is interesting for its use of some of the conventions of printed texts. The body of the manuscript is divided into sections, each subdivided into chapters. The title to each section is constructed to form a taper, a style used in early modern title pages and at the end of chapters. Although it must be admitted that for all its intentions, the effect is achieved with varying degrees of success. A possible candidate for the composition of this manuscript is John Lindsay, 17th Earl of Crawford (1596–1678). A penciled note at the b ase of the title page reads “Son of the Earl of Balcarres”. There are two other names on the first leaf, those of Robert Lindsay and James Lindsay. John Lindsay’s father was called Robert and he had a brother called James. Whilst these names are not uncommon, their constellation at around this date suggests that it might be the 17th Earl of Crawford. Comparison with the Earl’s hand suggests otherwise so it is more likely the hand of an amanuensis. The text is only very occasionally corrected suggesting that it was copied from another manuscript. The inconsistency of the tapered titles suggests that these were not copied but rather, were an expression of the scribe’s creativity, albeit one that they lack refinement."
