The calligrapher, René Michault, also known as an engraver, was one of the best pupils of the celebrated Nicolas Jarry (c. 1620–c.1674), ‘écrivain et noteur de la musique’ to Louis XIV. The Cadran horizontal, refers to the Treaties of Peace of Nijmegen, August 1678 to December 1679, which ended the wars which had been started by the Franco-Dutch War of 1672–70.
