Folger-specific note
Purchase made possible by The B. F. Saul Rare Book Acquisitions Fund. From dealer's description: "The Edwin Booth archive consists of three lengthy Edwin Booth autograph documents, comprising thirty eight pages in total. The first is seven pages, legal folio, dated September 12, 1867. The second is twenty-eight pages, legal folio, dated September 17, 1867; the third is three pages, folio, dated September 18, 1867. Each of these is signed by Edwin Booth. Each of the documents relate to land and property transactions Booth entered into for the building of Booth's Theatre, Booth's "Grand Temple of the Arts," which would open on February 3, 1869 on the southeast corner of 23rd Street and Sixth Avenue in New York. Booth's acquisition of the property was one of his first steps in the building of his long dreamed of theatre, at which he would appear in Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Othello, and many more during the late 1860s and early 1870s. Booth's Theatre was one of the finest theatres in America until Booth lost it due to financial mismanagement, and it enabled him to stage and act in some of the most acclaimed Shakespearean productions of his era."
