Folger-specific note
Folger copy 51 is nominally of the first issue, as formulated by William B. Todd, "Issues and states of the Second Folio and Milton's epitaph on Shakespeare," Studies in bibliography, v. 5 (1952-53), p. 81-108. However, the issue cannot be definitively determined. This copy wants [superscript pi]A2 (title leaf) but contains [superscript pi]A5 ("Effigies" leaf) proper to the first issue (in state Ib). Wants port. (on title page). Wants also [superscript pi]A1 and *2.3. Supplied are a nonce manuscript title page bearing the text of the t.p. of the 2nd Folio, formatted to mimic the t.p. of the 2nd Folio, and a facing page bearing the text of the Ben Jonson "verses", formatted to mimic the page facing the t.p. of the 2nd Folio ([superscript pi]A1 verso). Wants 3b5-end (including the colophon). Supplied is a manuscript copy of the wanting text on pages numbered "397"-"456", formatted to mimic the printed text (the text in two columns to the page with a center and side rules, with headlines that are ruled above and below, and with catchwords; p. "456" is paged and ruled but otherwise blank). Signed "Catharine [sic] Hutton Jan. 11. 1788.--" (p. "455"). Presumably Catharine Hutton also wrote the nonce manuscript title page and the page in manuscript facing. Imperfections affect text slightly on I2, f1, and 2p1 and very slightly on F4, P3, R6, n3, 2a1, 2c5, and 2r4. Includes (1) an engraving of the Chandos port. of Shakespeare, by John Hall, pasted to the page facing the nonce manuscript title page, above the "verses"; (2) a manuscript copy of the signature, "By me William Shakespeare" endorsed "... a Copy of the hand writing of Shakespeare to his last will--taken by W[illiam] Hutton Mar 8 1787", pasted to the recto of a front flyleaf; and (3) a manuscript passage in pseudo-secretary hand, signed "Wm Shakespeare", presumably a forgery by William Henry Ireland, tipped-in ibid. Accompanied by (1) 3 wood engravings of the house where Shakespeare was born, as it was in 1564, 1769, and 1830, pasted together on a page--removed to file; (2) 2 wood engravings, of "New Place, The Residence of Shakspere, where he died" and of "The Monumental Bust of Shakspere", pasted respectively to the recto and verso of a leaf--removed to file; and (3) an engraving of the statue of Shakespeare in Poets' Corner, Westminster Abbey, "H. Gavelot delin."--removed to Art Vault. Bookplate of Thomas Hutton.
