London: John Bill and Christopher Barker, 1668 folio (340 x 225mm.), first English edition, engraved title-page from the Dutch edition (Amsterdam: J. Blaeu, 1658), 8 double-page engraved plates, without final blank, early calf, rebacked, worn Henrick Ruse (1624-1679) had military experience throughout Europe before being appointed engineer responsible for the defences of Amsterdam in 1651. This book is a translation of Ruse's Verstercke Vesting, published by Blaeu in 1654 (see lot 175). RARE: Wing lists only four copies in institutional libraries, and only the Macclesfield copy has appeared at auction in recent decades.
