Folger-specific note
Ordered from: Christopher Edwards, D9269, 2019-11-19 at Sotheby's Auction "The Cottesloe Military Library", November 19, 2019, Lot 338. From dealer's description: "The exercise of the foot wherein are contained the words of command for musket and pike. With the evolutions. Describeing every faceing and every pace therein to be made Also the marching of armies. Encamping and giveing battel. The whole delineated and explained on copper plates. London: sold by Robert Morden and Sutton Nicholls, 1694. 8vo (155 x 105mm.), 22 leaves (title and 21 plates), engraved throughout on one side only, the plates numbered 1, 3- 19, 21 and 2 further plates initialled "S.P." with numerals altered seemingly to 20 and 22, nineteenth-century buff wrappers, tear in title neatly repaired, section of plate 6 cut out and seemingly used as an overlay on plate 10, binding slightly rubbed and soiled RARE. We have been unable to trace this work in ESTC. The first plate and final 10 plates are to be found in two earlier works entitled Military discipline or the art of war (published and sold by Morden, 1685? and 1689 [ESTC R23605 and R202228] - see lot 327), and Fortification and military discipline (published and sold by Morden, 1688 [ESTC R6217] - see lot 178), both of which are by Captain J.S. (John Stevens?). However here there is a new engraved title and 10 new plates and the other plates have been re- engraved with additional explanatory wording. There is no printed text.
