Folger-specific note
From dealer's description: "4to, ll. 26, with 20 l 'hand-coloured woodcut arms of the noble f milies 6fVenice within woodcut escutcheons; the last page containing four woodcut escutcheons with arms added in ink and pencil (one for the Rotigno family); title-page a little stained, and some finger-marks; stitched in contemporary stiff buff card, with manuscript title in ink at head; corners rounded, covers quite marked, but firm, stitching renewed; an attractive copy. An attractive copy of a guide to the coats of arms of all the noble families of Venice. This collection was apparently first published in 1541 (see Cicognara), but with a different coat of arms to the title page. A veritable pageant of all the influential families of Venice represented in their coats of arms, arranged in alphabetical order, from Arimondo to Zantani. Most of these noble families were merchants. Many of the coats of arms are symbolic of the family name in some way, and depict a dolphin for the Dolfin family, a rampant horse for the Cavalli family, a bridge for the Ponte family etc. This copy is particularly appealing because of its striking contemporary colouring. This 1608 edition has the Donado coat of coat of arms on the title page. See Cicogna p. 314 no. 2215; OCLC: Rochester, Iowa, New York public Library."
