Folger-specific note
Purchase made possible by The Professor Emile V. Telle Acquisitions Fund. From dealer's description: "12mo (150 × 85 mm), pp. [16], 268, [4] (adverts), engraved title vignette. Some light browning and thumbing. Contemporary black goatskin, all-over gilt patterned with cottage roof panels surrounded by four vine branch motifs, flowers and cornerpieces, spine in six compartments, gilt edges, marbled endpapers (the first with traces of a removed bookplate. Spine slightly rubbed, but otherwise the gilt in exceptionally fresh condition. Contemporary title inscription 'Reb[ecca] Hatton'. A superb Restoration-era gift binding in the cottage roof style popular in the 1670s, the book bearing an early female ownership inscription. Advice to a Friend was a popular series of sermons, maxims, and prayers composed by Patrick Simon, prebend of Westminster and later bishop of Ely, for his future wife, Penelope Jephson. It was first published the previous year. Wing P379. The binding is very similar to the anonymous binding of Henry Davis Gift 118 (on another work by Simon, The Christian Sacrifice, 1672)." Ordered from Justin Croft Antiquarian Books D9364, 2019-11-08, Cat. Boston International Book Fair, Novermber 15-17 2019, #52.
