Folger-specific note
From dealer's description: "Albert Edwin Drinkwater (1851-1923), actor, father of poet John Drinkwater, stage manager and company manager for Harley Granville-Barker (1877-1946), actor, dramatist; his wife Lillah McCarthy Copy of 'Shakespeare's Comedy of Twelfth Night An Acting Edition With a Producer's Preface by Granville Barker', with stage directions and deletions for the production in autograph (annotations) of stage manager A. E. Drinkwater. London: William Heinemann, 1912. A frail artefact of one of the most innovative and influential of Granville Barker's Shakespeare productions, from the papers of Barker's wife Lillah McCarthy, who played Viola in it. For the writer of the directions see E. Salmon, 'Granville-Barker: A Secret Life' (1984), which states: 'A. E. Drinkwater was for several years Barker's stage manager and company manager at the Little Theatre and the Kingsway'. (The present item indicates that Drinkwater's work for Barker was not limited to these two theatres.) xi + 96pp, 12mo. With plates of costume designs by Norman Wilkinson. In printed paper wraps. Internally clean and only lightly aged, but somewhat shaky, in worn wraps. Loosely inserted in the volume is a slip of grey paper, torn from the letterhead of 'The Kingsway Theatre. | Proprietress: Miss Lena Ashwell. | Great Queen Street, W.C. | Lillah McCarthy Granville Barker Manager: A. E. Drinkwater. | Tel.: 2176 Gerrard. | Box Office: 4032 Gerrard.' On the reverse of the letterhead is listed in Drinkwater's autograph in ink the characters present in seven of the play's scenes, beginning with 'Act. I Sc: 5. part of | Maria | Olivia | Malvolio | Feste | Sir Toby | Viola'. Next to the first six of the seven scenes, Drinkwater has added in pencil: 'Full Set', 'At back', 'Curtain', 'Full Set', 'Full Set', 'Full Set'. Drinkwater's autograph additions in the book itself are all in pencil. His ownership signature, comprising a monogram of his initials, is on the front page and recto of the frontispiece. He has also made extensive deletions, including the first half of the first act, following which he adds the direction: 'Olivia Malvolio Feste on | Maria enters'. More deletions throughout, with the directions: 'General Exit', 'Someone to place chair', ;Enter Sir Toby Sir Andrew Fabian Maria', 'end of scene | if line for Mal change', 'stet top 55', 'x to Maria', 'enter Viola', 'Olivia returning immediately'."|Ordered from Richard Ford, D9350, 2019-09-30, email quote.
