Cent. Trevi ibidem An. 1647 impressum. Gedruckt zu Mayntz. Mainz, [c. 1680-1700]. 24mo (100 x 55 mm), 24 leaves, bit soiled, disbound. In early modern Europe printed amulets such as the one above were produced to ward off evil and the bearer was encouraged to insert said amulet (hence the small size) in sacks or suspension capsules that could be worn around the neck and over the heart. These printed amulets are surprisingly uncommon, though they must have been produced in large quantities. The date on the title is deemed fictitious' (cf. KVK), in the text are various dates in the 1670s, and the date on the last leaf verso may be closer to the actual date of printing: 'Ex libello de effectu Numismat. S. Bened. Fuldae Impress. A. 1674'. Not in Vd17 or Vd18. This printed amulet is recorded in many different editions until the 1720s, some with more text."
