Folger-specific note
From dealer's description: "Rouen, chez Adrian Ovyn. 1632. 8vo (11 x 17cm) [8], 1065, [1]pp., with an additional engraved titlepage, a few negligible marginal wormholes not affecting text, very good in original plain calf. An early French translation of John Barclay’s Argenis (1621), this scarce Rouen-printed edition seems to be a republication of that first printed at Paris in 1623, attribued to the obscure “N. Guibert.” The work was very popular in France, and the classical scholar Pierre de Marcassus (1584-1664), professor of rhetoric at the Collège de la Marche in Paris also produced a French translation (Paris,1622; revised 1626) as well as F.N. Coffeteau (Paris, 1624). The engraved architectural title-page in this Rouen edition is the work of Pieter van Langeren. For a list of the different French translations of Barclay’s Argenis, see: John Barclay. Argenis. Edited and translated by Mark Riley & Dorothy Pritchard Huber, 2004, p.56." Ordered from Samuel Gedge D9311, 2019-06-07, Cat. Summer List 2019 #48. Purchase made possible by The Professor Emile V. Telle Acquisitions Fund.
