Folger-specific note
Purchase made possible by The Professor Emile V. Telle Acquisitions Fund. From dealer's description: "Francofurdi, Apud Joannem Wechelum. 1589. Second edition. 8vo (11 x 17cm) 111, [1]pp., title-page with woodcut device, very good in modern leather-backed marbled boards. Printed at Frankfurt in 1589 for the edification of continental European students grappling with the ramifications of new concepts introduced by the Protestant thinker Petrus Ramus (1515-1572) in philosophy, education, logic and rhetoric, this treatise by Sir William Temple (1554-1627) had first been printed in London in 1580. It was issued in a pamphlet war fought between Temple and Everard Digby (1551-1605) as a response to Digby’s first salvo De duplici methodo ... (London, 1580) in which he attacked the Ramist methodology of the use of a single method of dialectic, as opposed to the long-established Aristotelian framework. Shaaber T4." Ordered from Samuel Gedge D9311, 2019-06-10, Cat. Summer List 2019 #40.
