Purchase made possible by The Richard J. Kuhta Fund for Library Acquisitions. Purchase made possible by The Lee Piepho Acquisitions Fund. Purchase made possible by The Professor Emile V. Telle Acquisitions Fund. From dealer's description: "Rare first issue of the first Latin edition of a beautifully and extensively illustrated Catholic prayer book by the exiled English priest Thomas Worthington (1549–1627), from 1599 to 1613 president of the Catholic seminary at Douai in French Flanders. The 30 splendid engravings were produced by the artist, Maarten de Vos (1532–1603) and engraver Johannes Baptista Collaert (1561?–1620), both in Antwerp. Worthington’s 22-page introduction explains the origins, structure and use of his prayerbook. The text is divided into 5 parts, each introduced by one of the five half-page engravings, in the first four followed by a series of full-page engraved New Testament scenes associated with the prayers. With the bookplate of one of the greatest book collectors of all time: Robert Hoe (1839–1909), New York printing press manufacturer and first president of the Grolier Club. With a tiny marginal worm trail unobtrusively restored in a few leaves of the preface, but still in very good condition. The binding is slightly worn at the hinges and corners, but also very good." Ordered from Antiquariaat Forum D9313, 2019-06-10, Cat. Firsts London's Rare Book Fair #74.
