Folger-specific note
From dealer's description: "Folio (410 × 295 mm), letterpress leaf listing the cast and 13 leaves of large photographic plates, mounted on dark grey card, captions printed in red, a couple shaved, but sense fully recoverable; bound with two similar publications (see below) in modern boards, preserving the original Art Nouveau printed front wrapper; some old tape repairs, mostly in the margins, one photograph slightly bent towards the gutter from when the book was closed, one leaf a little short (cut down when rebound?); in good condition overall, and complete. A rare published album of photos (portraits of actors, as well as scenes and staging) of the Moscow Art Theatre’s 1903 production of Julius Caesar. Lepkovsky issued six such albums. This is the last in the series, and the only one devoted to a Shakespeare play. The others were for the MAT’s productions of Gorky’s Na dne (The Lower Depths), Tolstoy’s Vlast’ t’my (The Power of Darkness), each in two volumes, and Hauptmann’s Einsame Menschen. The nineteen plates for the Gorky are bound in at the end here, without their wrappers, together with a contemporary illustrated edition of Gogol’s Revizor (second act, published by Kornilov in Moscow, 25 plates), performed by the MAT in 1908. Not found in Levidova. WorldCat locates 2 copies only, at the New York Public Library and Dickinson College." Ordered from Simon Beattie, D9090, 2017-05-13, email quote.
