Folger-specific note
From dealer's description: "KOROL LIR [KING LEAR] (1970) Set of 24 8 x 12" borderless photos, printed in Russia for this Russian film, directed by Grigori Kozintsev and Iosif Shapiro. The photos have just the slightest hint of shelf wear, near fine. Kozintsev (1905-1973) was one of the seminal figures in the groundbreaking silent Russian cinema of the 1920's. He experienced decades of bureaucratic harassment during the Stalin epoch. When Krushchev initiated a thaw in the arts, Kozintsev responded with a series of films adapted from classical literature---which included such highly acclaimed films as DON QUIXOTE (1957), HAMLET (1963), and this film. Russian photos from important Russian films are almost never encountered; although there were numerous Russian film adaptations of Shakespeare, this large group is the first I have ever found."
