Folger-specific note
From dealer's description: "HENRY V (1938) 10 x 8” double weight portrait of Ivor Novello, with stamp on verso of photographer Angus Mc Bean and a typed label affixed as well, near fine. Ivor Novello was a great matinee idol in London in the 20’s and 30’s, and he was appearing here in his first outing in Shakespeare. It is very interesting to note that the British public, in this era, were frightened of being in another war. Neville Chamberlin’s policy of appeasement was then very popular, and this Shakespeare play was seldom seen in those days, due to its perceived militarism. (It had received a production at the Old Vic in the previous year with Olivier, but it was rarely given a commercial, for profit run in those days, and this was the first such presentation of it in quite a long while.
