Title
Autographed letters signed to John Martin Harvey [manuscript].
Created/published
1905-1919.
Description
25 letters and a typescript review.
Language Note
Text in English.
Note
The letters are written a variety of papers and vary in length from 2 to 10 pages; about half of them respond directly to Harvey's performances as Richard III and Henry V; all are adulatory in their praise of him, being written in a style somewhere between enthusiastic and gushing, usually composed within a few hours of seeing Harvey's performances as Richard III or Henry V. The non-Shakespearian letters pay particular attention to Harvey's Maeterlinck interpretations, particularly Peleas and as the Burgomaster in Maeterlinck's Scaramouche with frequent congratulations on his charitable work during the Great War. Additionally a two page typescript review of Harvey's performance in Richard III, no doubt extracted from a newspaper or journal by Harvey's agent, entitled 'Richard himself...!'
