"The Presentation Edition". A publishing curiosity. The sheets for this one-volume Shakespeare were salvaged from the ruins of Virtue & Co's building in Amen Corner after the bombing of London on Dec 29, 1940. Originally published in 1925 as a set of four individual volumes, the sheets ended up in India and were "specially bound for sale in the Indian Empire" by The Standard Literature Company. This edition includes a new title-page (printed by the Mayflower Press of Plymouth in St. Albans) and an introductory two page leaf relating the story of the salvage beneath a black and white image of St. Paul's Cathedral during the bombing, captioned "A Souvenir of the War - And Something More".
Per bookseller: "The British Library record for the 1925 edition 4 vols adds the comment: A reissue, with different illustrations and a new preface, of the edition published in 1892-94."
