Note
From dealer's description: "First Edition. At once a model book consulted by professional scribes and their clients for choice phrases, paragraphs and even entire letters and an instructional manual for autodidacts seeking the acme of epistolary style, this seems the earliest compilation of its type in French. Advice on structure, tone and intent precede and follow the sample text, allowing the paying customer to carefully weigh her options and the student to securely find his footing. It offers vituperative, expository, recriminative, consolatory, defensive, congratulatory, persuasive, familial and Licentious examples. A surgeon complains about his competitor the barber; a gentleman loans a book to a friend; a plaintiff advances his case ; a father pours out his sorrows on the death of his son [...]. The final piece sums up the content and purpose of the Prothocolle effectively advertising its virtues to buyers who browse back to front.!have identified three editions of the core text and its variants: all survive in one or two copies (only the Antwerp 1550 variant is held by a U.S.library).The present printing is dated from the state of Jean Saint Denis' device - after his widow sold it (and his premises) to Pierre Sergent in1533 but before Sergent inserted his own initials in lieu of his predecessor's. A fine copy (wax spot on one leaf), from the Libraries of Lignerolles, Tura and Bonna."
