Note
A highly attractive manuscript from “Lant-major, in South Wales” written in English. The author uses the pseudonym "Zaccheus Leolinns". An intriguing name, the Zaccheus presumably referencing the tax collector in the Gospels, but Leonnis being less obvious. There was a Leolinus Magnus, Prince of Wales, which given that the manuscript was written in Wales makes this a distinct possibility. The title page is set in imitation of a printed title with a decorative border in orange, red and brown. The text is arranged like a printed book with a preface, and it even styles itself "The First Edition" on the title page. However, there is no extant text by this title nor does the main text bear close resemblance to any printed works. It would therefore appear that this is a self-published manuscript. Contents in brief: "To the Reader." 4 pages, commencing "To all afflicted, Sistressed, dissatisfied, Disquieted, and Discomposed Christians throughout the World. Dear Hearts, If you will Trauell through this HollyValley to wards the New Jerusalem, you may Gather Sweet Roses on the way, that will Cure the wounds of Sin, of Sorrow" etc. ... "Resolve to spend some time with God in Private every Day, Every good Prayer, is a sweet Sounding Melody in the Ears of God." ... "And now I wish you all Happiness, that this Earthly Paradise can afford, I Rest. your Humble servant.. in Christ Jesus. Z.L. march. 22 1701". The main text commences, “1. What Prayer is.” “2. What time thou art to take For Prayer.” “3. First, prepare thy Heart, then / Seek the Lord by Prayer.” The numbering becomes confused here, not least because we appear to be missing pages 3-6. Where the numbering is picked up on page 7 appears to be the latter end of a subsection, "[1] "Rising of one Sun, make the Morning / Skie so Glorious..." followed by, "2. Thou knowest not how, neere the / evill spirit..." "3. If thou hearest the Cock-crow; reme-/mber Peter to imitate Him..." "4. Remember that Almighty God is about / thy Bed..." "5. As thou art putting on thine Apparell. / Remember..." ". Consider, how Gods mercy is renew-/ed unto thee every Morning..." But now without any interuption of text we have a head, "9. Meditations to stir us up to / Morning Prayer." (In three sections). "10. A Key to open the Day." "11. Preparatory Prayer. "12. Morning Prayer." "13. Confession of Sinnes." "14. Morning Prayer, for Grace." "15. Morning Prayer for Peace." "16. A Prayer to be said when we wash /in the morning." "17. A Noon Prayer." "18. Meditations for the Evening." (6 sections). 19. A Lock or Key to Seal up the Night." "20. Evening Prayer." "21. Another Evening prayer, to beg / of Almighty God, Forgiveness fo the sins / and the offences that you have done..." "22. Another Evening prayer, to beg / of God, to forgiveus our sins, & save / our souls." And so on through to, "97. A Prayer for a Family. "98. A Prayer against Idleness." "99. A Prayer for a Friend." "100. A Prayer to God the Father." "101. A Prayer to God the Sonne." "102. A Prayer to God the Holy-Ghost." It seems our author got confused in his numbering system, for he jumps (or as he perhaps thought, logically flows) from 109 to 1010 and then continues to page 1030, where it seems he lost faith in his idiosyncratic numbering and so begins again at number 1 (the text is continuous despite the change in pagination with prayers running from "80. A Prayer against procrastination" on page 1030, to "81. A Prayer against Sensuality" on page 1) and continues to page 25. A later owner, one Rees Thomas circa 1770 has written various receipts and pen trials on the final 23 blanks. -- taken from seller's description.
