Scope and content
The inscription on the flyleaf of this manuscript catechism records that it “was composed by Mr. John Clerke minister in shipp Smerna Merchant in her voyage from England to East India anno 1656, Capt. Nicholas Read; by the desire of Mr George Oxinden, to be learned by Streynsham Master, Henry Bromfield & Richard Wilson. Wrott by George Gibbon.” The large engraved heraldic bookplate is that of Sir Streynsham Master (1640-1724) who used this catechism while travelling out to India with his uncle, the prominent East India Company merchant and administrator Sir George Oxenden (1620-1669). George Gibbon, in whose hand the text is penned, was Oxenden’s servant. Arranged in eight chapters, in question and answer format throughout, by John Clerke, presumably an East India Company chaplain.
