Folger-specific note
Dealer's description: This printed summons dated 2 February 1626 addressed to Matthew Stokys (d.1636), fellow of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, as “farmer of the Rectorys of Dilham and Honing” in Norfolk, served as notification that he must appear 13 April 1626 “at the Signe of the Blacke Swann in Norwich” before the Receiver General for the county Richard Ashcroft, “there to make payment of all such rents and summes of money as shall be found due and payable to His Majesty at the Feast of the Annunciation of the blessed virgin Mary.” As recorded in contemporary manuscript at the foot of the document, the payment due was “for rents belonging to the Byshopwrick of Ely” from whom Stokys rented the rectories. On his death in 1636 he bequeathed them to Gonville and Caius for the foundation of one fellowship and three scholarships.
