Notes largely on historical and religious topics, with numerous references to contempoary political and ecclesiastical figures; also anecdotes of contemporaries at Oxford, stories of the English Civil War, notes on etymology, and financial memoranda, etc. References to printing and distribution of books (leaf 4v), the Bodleian Library (leaf 20r), the Marmora Arundeliana (20v). Among the sources referenced and people otherwise mentioned are William Dugdale, Thomas Hobbes (especially leaves 124-138), Anthony Van Dyck, Joshua Hoyle, John Rushworth, Agrippa d'Aubigné, Gerard Langbaine, Patrick Young, Thomas James, Samuel Bochart, Sir Edward Walker, Philippe de Mornay (leaf 44v), Andrew Yarranton, John Cotton, William Harvey, Sir Edmund Godfrey, John Gadbury, Thomas Dangerfield, Sir George Wakeman, Edward Morgan, Sir William Temple, the earl of Clarendon, Matthew Sutcliffe, Gilbert Burnet and Erasmus.

One of several volumes, originally 17 in number, known as "Ward's Diary." 16 of these volumes are now Folger MS V.a.284-299.
According to R.G. Frank, the notes on leaves 1r-28v were written at Oxford late summer and early autumn 1659 ("Dr. Owen told Mr. Westrom coming fro[m] London July 2 1659" (leaf 4v)); leaves 29r-158r written at Stratford ca. 1674-1681 (notes referring to the Great Fire of Southwark, 1676 (leaf 115) and memorandum of payments received June 16, 1681 (leaf 152)).
