Summary
A continuation of the previous volume (Folger MS V.a.290). Notes on illnesses, their symptoms and treatment; excerpts from books on medicine; references to autopsies, dissections, and physiological experiments and many contemporary Oxford practitioners, especially William Conyers, Thomas Willis, Edmund Dickinson, Sir Thomas Millington, Stephen Toone, and Richard Lower. Mentions various gardens and gardeners (e.g. Jacob Bobart and the Oxford Botanical Garden, the Apothecaries Garden in the Barbican, London) and places where certain plants can be found. Also refers to certain libraries (e.g. Westminster Abbey, Sion, and All Souls'). The section written at London is largely a diary recording visits to chemists and several hospitals (e.g. Christchurch, the Charterhouse, St. Bartholomews and St. Thomas'), as well as other places of interest in London. Mentions seeing the mock prince of Lincoln's Inn on January 6, 1661/62 (leaf 144r) and visiting with Mr. Sampson, a chemist who had been the "operator" of Raleigh's still room while in the Tower who "told me many things of Sir Walter" (leaf 158r). Notes on pharmacology and chemistry include an alphabetical list of symbols used in pharmacology "extracted out of Schroder" (leaf 164).
This volume also mentions Ralph Williams, William Harvey and his De generatione, Thomas Foxe, Johannes van Horne, Sir Edward Alston, Jonathan Goddard, Molines, John Selden, Johannes Kepler, William Faithorne, Thomas Bushell, Francis Bacon and Sir Kenelm Digby.
