Summary
Copy of Andrew Melville's Latin poem criticizing the liturgy of the Anglican church as beholden to Roman Catholic worship and attacking both Oxford and Cambridge for passing resolutions hostile to the Puritans at the beginning of James I's reign (leaves 2r-5r). Followed by a series of 37 epigrams by George Herbert countering Melville's attack with a defense of the Church of England, statement of his opposition to Puritanism, and loyal addresses to James I and Charles, Prince of Wales (leaves 7r-17v)
Language Note
In Latin.
Note
Andrew Melville's Pro supplici, or Anti-tami-cami-categoria was written in 1603/4 and was circulated in manuscript before being published in 1620 in Parasynagma Perthense et iuramentum Ecclesiae Scoticanae et A.M. Antitamicamicategoria (STC 4361). George Herbert may have begun work on his epigrams while a student at Westminster School, although it appears most of these epigrams were written between 1620 and 1622 (i.e. after Herbert's appointment as university orator at Cambridge and between the publication of Melville's work and his death). Musae responsoriae circulated in manuscript while Herbert was at Cambridge but was not published until 1662 James Duport, dean of Peterborough, included it in Ecclesiastes Solomonis (Wing V669).
