Artist: Bell began as an actor in Daly's company in 1885 and designed costumes in 1886 for Daly's production of Merry wives of Windsor in which he also played Fenton. Other Daly productions for which he did designs include Taming of the shrew (1886) and As you like it (with Charles Biancini). Bell's name is listed on the program for Love's labour's lost as the costume designer.
Full figure designs, some with pencil sketches of details in the margins. Two of the items are watercolors of scenes rather than costumes. Many of the items are unlabeled and none are signed.
History: Designs were executed for the 1891 production which opened March 28 and ran until April 11. Several of the designs may be seen as finished products in accompanying photographs in the volume which contains Bell's watercolors.
Provenance: Items are contained in an extra-illustrated volume of the Daly edition of Love's labour's lost, printed from the prompter's copy with a few prefatory thoughts ... by William Winter, privately printed for Daly in 1891.
Subject: Included are 5 designs for costumes of the King of Navarre, played by John Drew, 2 for the Princess of France, played by Ada Rehan and at least one design for each of the other characters.
