Summary
"Uncle Sam" stands, holding a copy of a first folio under one arm and the painting "The Blue Boy" by Gainsborough under the other; the ghost of Shakespeare stands in the background looking on as Uncle Sam reads the inscription from his tomb.
Note
Drawing published in Punch, 24 May 1922 (p. 411) with the caption title Autolycus, U.S.A. and printed dialogue: "Uncle Sam. 'Now, that's real disappointing. I'd set my heart on that skeleton.' Shade of Shakspeare. 'But all the same I should feel more comfortable if it was insured.'"
The Daniel and Sheldon copies of the First Folio were purchased by A.W.S. Rosenbach at Christie's on 16 May 1922, in the Burdett-Coutts sale (see New York Times, 17 May 1922) and the Blue Boy was bought by Henry Huntington 12 November 1921 (see New York Times 13 and 14 November 1921).
