Summary
Oliver Cromwell on horseback wearing three-quarter length armor. Another man stands on the ground to his left, holding his helmet. A battle is being waged behind them, and further in the background the edges of a city on a hill are visible.
Note
This print was based on an equestrian portrait of Charles I by Van Dyck, originally used by Lombart to serve as the basis for a portrait of Oliver Cromwell. It went through many subsequent states in which the head of the rider was replaced so that all in all it has been used to depict Cromwell, Charles I, Louis XIV, and even a "headless horseman" in one state where the head is entirely erased (see Layard).
