Scope and content
Collection of newsletters received and compiled by the Newdigate family of Arbury Hall in Nuneaton, Warwickshire. The earlier letters chiefly issued by an office overseen by Sir Joseph Williamson during the period he was Undersecretary of State (1660-1674) and Secretary of State for the Northern Department (1674-1679); these official newsletters were issued on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays and sent chiefly to agents, but also to certain subscribers. Later sections of the collection include both newsletters issued by the paper office started by Williamson as well as those issued by commercial vendors such as John Dyer. The newsletters cover a wide range of topics, including news from the Stuart courts and those of most of Europe, parliamentary news, commercial and maritime relations in the English Atlantic and Indian colonies, social and diplomatic affairs, the theater, and events such as the Popish Plot and the Great Frost of 1683-1684.
The newsletters in this collection were addressed to three successive generations of the Newdigate family: Sir Richard Newdigate, 1st baronet, Sir Richard Newdigate, 2nd baronet, and Sir Richard Newdigate, 3rd baronet.
