The topics represent many of Richard Smith's interests, particularly those relating to the Church of England and other religious issues: writings and notes on the Bishops and Archibishops of England, Christ's descent into hell, a collection of short essays on religious and secular topics, rites and ceremonies of the church (presumably the Church of England), and indulgences. A significant portion of Series 1 consists of working notes and draft of a work entitled "A collection of all the Archbishops and Bishops of the Realm of England since An[no] D[omi]ni MDCXVI unto An[no] D[omi]ni 1660," intended as a continuation of A catalogue of the Bishops of England by Francis Godwin.
