Scope and content
Dated 1652-1663, 1668, 1659-1663. Letters to and from Martin, his family and friends, among them mother Barnardiston, brother Hawkins, brother Nanney, cousin Hall, uncle Sir Denny Ashburnham, Anne Michelborne and her daughter Anne (mainly before his marriage to her in 1661), Sir E. H. [Edward Hales?] bt., R. Lang and Sir John Jacob. J. Martin wrote from London and Hastings and Rye in Sussex. The letters between him and R. Lang, who had turned from the Church of England, enter into their religious differences (p.11-20), but few of the letters refer to contemporary historical events; one of February 22, 1659/60 (p. 63) refers to the celebrations after the readmission of the excluded members to Parliament, another of March 29, 1660 (p. 69) to Charles II's imminent return.
Compiled ca. 1650. Summaries of the speeches of the king and others in the House of Lords, June [actually August 4], 1625; a version of the report to the Commons of the proceedings in the Lords with a few personal observations of the reporter, [August] 9 (p. 2); the petition of the Commons to the King, August 10 (p. 40); and the interrogatories ministered to the Earl of Bristol shortly after his coming out of Spain, [July 10], 1624 -- printed with some differences in Hardwicke's Miscellaneous state papers, I, 494 -- (p. 46).
