Historical background
On page 19 the writer quotes a line of Thomas Parnell's "To Mr. Pope" as by his [great] uncle. This caused the manuscript to be attributed to Sir John Parnell (1744-1801) until 2023, when research by David Menzies, University College Cork, revealed the writer to be that man's cousin, Samuel Hayes (1743-1795), whose mother, Anne, was the daughter of Thomas Parnell's brother, John. Samuel Hayes matriculated from Christ Church Oxford in November 1762, aged 19, as described on page 23.
Location of related archival material
Samuel Hayes's 3-volume Journal of a tour thro' Wales and England anno 1769 (containing similar observations on farming, landscaping, and architecture) and a 1-volume account book begun in 1777 (recording income, expenses, and the construction of Avondale House) are now LSE Library Archives and Special Collections Coll Misc 0038 (acquired from Bernard Halliday, no. 14, cat. 82, 1926).
