Scope and content
These manuscripts illustrate the ways in which the Kays of Woodsome, Yorkshire, with great industry and perseverance over several generations, tried to improve their family fortunes, building, farming and acquiring land for the benefit of their House.
Original family papers (X.d.445-449) and 18th century copies (W.b.482-484). Contains: account book, ca. 1561-ca. 1592 (X.d.446); note of rental book, 1582 (X.d.448, p. 1, W.b.482, p. 1); rental books, 1583 (X.d.449), and 1594 (W.b.482, p. 37); rents and duties owed by the lord of Woodsome, 1583 (W.b.482, p. 26); administrative divisions in certain parishes adjacent to Woodsome (W.b.482, p. 3); memoranda of improvements carried out on their properties by Arthur, John, Robert, John and John Kay with particular reference to church matters, building, land buying, expenses, good husbandry and law suits (X.d.446, 448-449, W.b.482). Recognizances and other documents arising out of John Kay's duties as a J.P., 1620-1622, incomplete (X.d.447).
