Note
Published in open competition with Robert Walker.
In 1735 a collection of the whole of the plays was published, but cannot be regarded as an edition, though generally recorded as such when bound up in 8 volumes (Ford).
Tonson published single plays separately, some in several editions, then issued volume title pages for binding in eight volumes. No two sets will be the same, individual plays differing as to edition/issue. Volume title pages are mis-dated 1635. Each play has a dated title page, as well as separate pagination and register. Some plays are dated as early as 1732 and as late as 1736. See Ford (p. 58-140) for imprint and pagination information for individual plays, as Tonson used 2 imprints (seemingly simultaneously), sometimes for different issues of the same play.
Contains the plays only.
There is no general title page.
Vol. 1 with a portrait frontispiece from the worn Du Guernier plate (Ford). Engraved plates variously lettered: Lud. du Guernier or P. Fourdrinier. Volume and page lettered on plates sometimes differs from play's actual location because of re-use from 1714 and 1728 editions.
With the Life of Shakespeare by Nicholas Rowe. Originally meant to precede Tempest (v.1), then reprinted with catchword 'Dramatis' so it could precede any play in the series (Ford).
Julius Caesar "as it is acted at Theatre Royal, Drury-Lane"; Hamlet with a cast list.
Some plays with advertisements for J. Tonson.
