Pope's second edition was published in 8 volumes in 1728, followed by a supplementary 9th volume, then reissued in 10 volumes, with cancel title pages. Pope's second edition may be considered complete in 8, 9, or 10 volumes, though no set is known with a general title page printed 'in nine volumes' (Ford).
Vol. 10 volume title page reads: "The works of Mr. William Shakespear : the tenth volume : containing Venus and Adonis : Tarquin and Lucrece : with his miscellany poems : to which are added critical remarks on his plays : and an essay on the art, rise, and progress of the stage, in Greece, Rome, and England, both by Mr. Gildon : also a glossary of the old words us'd in these works / the whole revis'd and corrected, with a preface, by Dr. Sewell."
The imprints of the volume title pages in volumes 1-3, 6-8 read: "Printed for J. Tonson in the Strand"; those of volumes 4, 5 and 9 read: "Printed for J. Tonson in the Strand, and for J. Darby, A.
