Inscribed on verso of metal piece at bottom: "Purchased at Mr. Garrick's sale in 1823 and presented by the committee of the Covent Carden Theatrical Fund to their treasurer, Iohn Fawcett, Esq., in grateful testimony of his valuable land unparalleled services in supporting and bringing to a state of perfection an institution (commenced by Garrick) by which numbers of his profession will be secured from poverty in their latter days and in whose gratitude the name of Fawcett must ever hold a place equally honorable to its posessor as to humanity. 'A gift keeps even measure with the heart / And doth expand in worth and efficacy / As 'tis received.' / March 10th, 1824".
