Related works: A sketch was in the Lawrence sale, Christie's, 15 May 1830, lot 20. Its present whereabouts is unknown. A copy of the Guildhall painting by Washington Allston is in the Players Club, New York, and another copy is in the Dyce Collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
Annotated on verso in brown ink on shaped paper pasted in center: "Finely Painted / Portrait / of / John Kemble / as / Coriolanus." Beneath this in a different hand is a "signature" with flourishes apparently written over an earlier, fainter inscription: "Henry Harlowe [last word or words no longer legible; possibly a date that has been written over 'Lawrence']."
Original painting: London, Royal Academy, 1798, no. 225, now in the Guildhall Art Gallery, London, 113 x 70 in.
